What can actually be said about the brand, what this site does and does not cover, and the order worth reading things in if you are new.
Read moreEvaluating a site does not require technical knowledge. Most of the criteria that actually matter are visible to anyone within a few minutes.
1. How clearly are the terms written?
Open the terms before anything else and look at three things. Are they written in language a person can follow, or are they generic text pasted in? Do they carry a last-revised date? And can you find the conditions that matter most? If you cannot find them at all, that is itself an answer.
Clear terms do not make a site good. But a site with no readable terms means you are agreeing to something you cannot see.
2. Does the contact channel actually work?
Send one simple question before opening an account. What matters is not only how fast a reply comes but whether it answers what you asked. A canned response to a different question tells you more than silence does.
3. How does the page talk to you?
Notice whether it is trying to speed up your decision. Countdown clocks, "only a few places left" and expiry warnings are pressure devices rather than information.
Notice too whether anything is guaranteed or assured. Language of that kind cannot be true of a service like this, and its presence is a warning in itself.
4. Is what it asks for proportionate?
Identity verification is normal and has reasons behind it. Asking for a password to a different service, asking you to install an extra app "to verify", or requesting access to the messages on your device is not normal in any case.
5. Is the whole site consistent?
Open at least three pages beyond the homepage. A site built carefully is roughly the same quality throughout. A site built quickly is usually good on the front page only.
6. What you can always check yourself
- Does the hostname in the address bar match what you meant to open?
- Does the connection raise a certificate warning?
- Do you hold your own evidence of anything you have done?
None of those three depends on anybody's word, and all three are information you own.
What this article does not do
It ranks nothing, scores nothing and recommends no particular operator. Ranking requires continuously verified data, which a static information site does not have.
